Acrylonitrile (abbreviated ACN), with the chemical formula C₃H₃N, is an important raw material for the three major synthetic materials: plastics, synthetic rubber, and synthetic fibers. It is an organic compound and a colorless liquid with a pungent odor. Acrylonitrile is highly flammable, and its vapors can form explosive mixtures with air. Exposure to open flames or high heat can cause ignition and release toxic gases. It reacts violently with oxidizing agents, strong acids, strong bases, amines, and bromine.

What are the properties of acrylonitrile?
Physical properties
- Colourless to pale yellow liquid with a mild pyridine-like odour. It evaporates rapidly.
- Boiling Point: 77.3°C
- Melting Point: -82°C
- Flash Point: 0°C open cup
- Vapour Pressure: 107.8 mm Hg at 25°C
- Density/Specific Gravity: 0.8004 at 25/4°C
- Vapour Density: 1.9
Chemical properties
Acrylonitrile is soluble in water and most common organic solvents such as acetone, benzene, carbon tetrachloride, ethyl acetate, and toluene. Acrylonitrile(ACN) is a reactive chemical that polymerises spontaneously when heated, or in the presence of a strong alkali, and can explode when exposed to flame. Technical grade acrylonitrile is more than 99% pure and always contains a polymerisation inhibitor, usually methylhydroquinone. It is incompatible and reactive with strong oxidisers, acids and alkalis; bromine; and amines. It attacks copper.
What is acrylonitrile used for?
- Acrylonitrile is used in the manufacture of acrylic and modacrylic fibres for use in clothing and textiles, such as fleece jumpers, sportswear, carpets and upholstery. Acrylic fibres are also used as a precursor in the production of carbon fibre.
- It is used in the production of plastics and resins such as acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), styrene-acrylonitrile (SAN) and nitrile rubber for fuel hoses and O-ring seals.
- Acrylonitrile is also used as a chemical intermediate in the production of other chemicals, such as acrylamide and adiponitrile.
- Acrylonitrile Monomer has historically been used in combination with carbon tetrachloride as a pesticide fumigant for flour-milling and bakery equipment and for storing tobacco.
