- Acrylonitrile is a key raw material used in producing synthetic fibers, rubber, and resins. The fiber made from it, known as polyacrylonitrile or acrylic fiber, has characteristics similar to wool and is often referred to as synthetic wool.
- When acrylonitrile is copolymerized with butadiene, it forms nitrile rubber (NBR), which features strong resistance to oil, cold, and wear, along with good electrical insulation.
- By copolymerizing acrylonitrile, butadiene, and styrene, ABS resin can be produced. This material is lightweight, impact-resistant, and performs well at low temperatures, making it suitable for a wide range of applications.
- Through hydrolysis, acrylonitrile can yield acrylamide, acrylic acid, and their esters.
- In addition, electrolytic hydrogenation of acrylonitrile produces adiponitrile, which can be further hydrogenated to make hexamethylenediamine, a major raw material for nylon 66.
- Acrylonitrile is also applied in the manufacture of waterproof agents, adhesives, and serves as a polar aprotic solvent.
