Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG), also known as glycol, is the simplest aliphatic diol. It possesses the chemical properties of alcohols, such as the ability to form ethers, esters, to be oxidized to aldehydes or acids, and to condense to form ethers. It can also be substituted by halogens. When reacting with acyl chloride or acid anhydride, it generally forms diesters.

Antifreeze & Cooling Systems
Ethylene glycol is a key ingredient in automotive and industrial antifreeze formulations. It functions by reducing the freezing point and elevating the boiling point of water-based systems, thereby protecting engines and machinery from cold-weather freezing and summer overheating.
Polyester Production
- PET Resins: One of the largest end uses of MEG is in producing polyethylene terephthalate (PET). Through reaction with terephthalic acid, it yields PET resins that are molded into beverage bottles, food packaging, and film. Globally, more than half of MEG output is consumed in PET resin manufacture.
- Polyester Fibers: MEG also contributes to the production of polyester fibers, both staple and filament types, which are widely utilized in apparel, home furnishings, and technical textiles.
Chemical Derivatives
It serves as a starting material for other glycols such as diethylene glycol (DEG), triethylene glycol (TEG), and various glycol ethers.
Other Uses
Beyond polymers, EG is applied in the paper sector as a plasticizer to enhance paper softness, in leather treatment as a moisturizer to prevent brittleness, and in specialty products like hydraulic fluids, coolants, and de-icing solutions.
