What is acrylonitrile?
Acrylonitrile, is a kind of organic compound, chemical formula C3H3N, is a colorless pungent smell liquid, flammable, its vapor and air can form an explosive mixture, in case of open fire, high heat is easy to cause combustion, and release toxic gases, and oxidants, strong acids, strong bases, amines, bromine reaction violently.
It is used in the manufacture of acrylic and modacrylic fibres for use in clothing and textiles, such as fleece jumpers, sportswear, carpets and upholstery. Acrylic fibres are also used as a precursor in the production of carbon fibre.
What is acetonitrile?
Acetonitrile is a nitrile that is hydrogen cyanide in which the hydrogen has been replaced by a methyl group. It has a role as a polar aprotic solvent.
It is used to make pharmaceuticals, perfumes, rubber products, pesticides, acrylic nail removers and batteries. It is also used to extract fatty acids from animal and vegetable oils.

Acrylonitrile (C₃H₃N):
- Contains a vinyl group (CH₂=CH–) attached to the nitrile.
- Colorless, volatile liquid with a pungent odor.
Acetonitrile (CH₃CN):
- Simplest nitrile with a methyl group attached to the nitrile.
- Colorless, low-boiling, volatile liquid with a mild, ether-like odor.
- Much less reactive than acrylonitrile and primarily used as a solvent.
