What is the function of acrylonitrile (ACN) in NBR latex?

Oct 10, 2025 Leave a message

Nitrile rubber (NBR) is an elastomer synthesized from acrylonitrile (ACN) and butadiene through emulsion polymerization. The acrylonitrile unit in its molecular structure provides polar cyano groups (-CN), imparting excellent oil resistance, solvent resistance, and abrasion resistance to the material.

Role of Acrylonitrile in NBR Latex

Improves Oil and Fuel Resistance

  • The polar nitrile group (–C≡N) in ACN increases rubber polarity, making NBR latex resistant to hydrocarbons, oils, and fuels.
  • Higher ACN content generally enhances oil resistance, but may reduce low-temperature flexibility.

Enhances Mechanical Strength

  • Incorporation of ACN contributes to tensile strength, abrasion resistance, and hardness.
  • Provides durability for industrial seals, gaskets, and hoses under high-stress conditions.

Adjusts Rubber Polarity and Compatibility

By controlling the ACN-to-butadiene ratio, manufacturers can tune the rubber's polarity, affecting adhesion to coatings, fillers, and plasticizers.
