Ethylene glycol (EG), also known as glycol, 1,2-ethylenediol, Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG), is the simplest diol. Glycol is a colorless, odorless, sweet-smelling liquid with low toxicity to animals. Glycol is miscible with water and acetone, but less soluble in ether. It is used as solvent, antifreeze and raw material for synthesizing polyester.

Mono ethylene glycol (MEG) Uses
- Mono Ethylene Glycol (MEG) is primarily employed in the production of polyester and polyester resins. It also serves as a humectant, plasticizer, surfactant, and is widely applied in synthetic fibers, cosmetics, and as a solvent for dyes and inks. In addition, it functions as an antifreeze in engines, a dehydrating agent for natural gas, and a wetting agent for cellophane, leather, textiles, and adhesives.
- Ethylene Glycol (EG) is a key raw material for producing polyethylene terephthalate (PET), including fiber-grade PET used in polyester textiles and bottle-grade PET for beverage containers. It is also used in the manufacture of alkyd resins, glyoxal, and related products. Beyond its role in automotive coolants, MEG is used in the transfer of industrial refrigeration and is often referred to as a refrigerant carrier.
- Furthermore, it can be applied in certain processes as a condensate medium similar to water.
