What is Bisbenzimide/Hoechst 33342?

Bisbenzimide, also known as Hoechst 33342, is a DNA-specific fluorescent dye commonly used for fluorescent staining of cell nuclei and cell analysis research. It appears as a yellow powder with a maximum absorption wavelength of 350 nm and a maximum emission wavelength of 461 nm. It is soluble in water, DMSO (dimethyl sulfoxide) and methanol.

Uses

1. Biological and medical research: Bisbenzimide is often used for DNA staining of living or fixed cells, especially for nuclear labeling of mammalian cells (such as stem cells and tumor cells). Cell morphology, counting or cell cycle analysis can be observed by fluorescence microscopy.
2. Cell sorting and flow cytometry: Hoechst 33342 is used as a DNA-specific fluorescent probe in flow cytometry to distinguish live and dead cells, or to analyze the DNA content of cell populations.
3. Neuroscience research: Hoechst 33342 can label neuronal nuclei and is used for morphological studies of brain tissue sections or cultured neurons to observe the structure and distribution of nerve cells.
