What is Phenylmagnesium chloride solut CAS 100-59-4 ?

Phenylmagnesium Chloride (CAS 100-59-4) is an organomagnesium compound with the molecular formula C₆H₅ClMg and a molecular weight of 136.86 g/mol. Its common commercial form is a 2.0 M tetrahydrofuran (THF) solution. The pure product is a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a typical ethereal odor. Also known as Chlorophenylmagnesium.

The density of phenylmagnesium chloride is 0.98 g/mL (20°C, 2.0M THF solution), the melting point is 89–90°C, the boiling point is 230°C (8 Torr), and the flash point is -17°C (highly flammable). It is soluble in aprotic solvents such as THF and ether at room temperature, and reacts violently with water to produce benzene, magnesium hydroxide and hydrogen chloride, releasing a lot of heat. Avoid storing below 25°C to prevent crystallization of magnesium salts (can be dissolved by slight heating).

Uses

 

As a classic Grignard reagent, Phenylmagnesium Chloride is widely used in:
Carbonyl addition reaction: reacts with aldehydes, ketones, and esters to generate tertiary or secondary alcohols (e.g. reacts with benzaldehyde to generate diphenylmethanol);
Metal-catalyzed coupling: participates in Negishi coupling, Kumada coupling, etc., to introduce phenyl groups into aryl/alkenyl halides;
Heterocyclic synthesis: used to construct nitrogen-containing heterocycles (such as indole, pyridine derivatives) and drug intermediates;
Material science: as a precursor for the preparation of organomagnesium catalysts or functional polymers.
