Butylmagnesium Chloride (CAS 693-04-9) is an organomagnesium compound with a molecular formula of C4H9ClMg and a molecular weight of 116.87 g/mol. Commercially available as 1.5–2.5M tetrahydrofuran (THF) solutions or diethyl ether solutions at room temperature, the pure reagent appears as a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a characteristic ether odor. Aliases include n-Butylmagnesium chloride and BUTYL(CHLORO)MAGNESIUM.
Butylmagnesium Chloride exhibits a melting point of -17°C, boiling point of 66°C (azeotropic with THF), and density of 0.962 g/mL (25°C, 2.0M THF solution). With a flash point of -17°C, it is highly flammable. The reagent dissolves readily in aprotic solvents like THF and diethyl ether but is insoluble in water and alcohols, reacting violently with water to produce n-butane, magnesium hydroxide, and hydrogen chloride with exothermic heat.

Carbonyl Addition: Reacts with aldehydes, ketones, and esters to yield secondary or tertiary alcohols (e.g., acetone → 2-methyl-2-pentanol).
Metal-Catalyzed Coupling: Participates in palladium-catalyzed Negishi coupling and nickel-catalyzed Kumada coupling to introduce n-butyl groups into aryl/vinyl halides.
Pharmaceutical and Pesticide Synthesis: Serves as an intermediate for constructing carbon chains or heterocyclic structures in antibiotics and insecticides.
Polymer Materials: Used to prepare butyl-functionalized polymers or organometallic catalysts for polymerization reactions.
