Commercially available as 1.5–2.5M tetrahydrofuran (THF) solutions or diethyl ether solutions at room temperature, the pure reagent appears as a colorless to pale yellow liquid with a characteristic ether odor. Aliases include n-Butylmagnesium chloride and BUTYL(CHLORO)MAGNESIUM.
Butylmagnesium Chloride exhibits a melting point of -17°C, boiling point of 66°C (azeotropic with THF), and density of 0.962 g/mL (25°C, 2.0M THF solution). With a flash point of -17°C, it is highly flammable. The reagent dissolves readily in aprotic solvents like THF and diethyl ether but is insoluble in water and alcohols, reacting violently with water to produce n-butane, magnesium hydroxide, and hydrogen chloride with exothermic heat.
