Polyethyleneimine typically appears as a colorless to light yellow viscous liquid at room temperature, with a density of 1.03–1.07 g/mL (25 ℃), melting point of 59–60 ℃, boiling point of 250 ℃ (decomposition), and flash point of >110 ℃. It is highly soluble in water and ethanol but insoluble in nonpolar solvents such as benzene and petroleum ether.

Uses
in industrial applications, PEI acts as a wet-strength agent in papermaking, improving the wet strength of unsized papers (e.g., filter paper, toilet paper) via crosslinking with cellulose hydroxyl groups while accelerating pulp water filtration and fine fiber flocculation. In water treatment, its high cationicity enables adsorption of anionic impurities and heavy metal ions, making it suitable as a flocculant or dispersant. For material processing, PEI serves as an epoxy resin curing agent, electroplating solution dispersant, or nanomaterial surface modifier.
