Brefeldin A is mainly used as an inhibitor of protein transport, which can specifically block the transport of proteins from the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to the Golgi apparatus. It inhibits the binding of coat proteins (such as β-COP and ADP-ribosylation factor, ARF) to the Golgi membrane, thereby inhibiting GDP-GTP exchange, destroying the structure of the Golgi apparatus and inhibiting its function. In addition, Brefeldin A is also commonly used to study protein transport mechanisms in cell biology, inhibit the secretion of proteins such as cytokines, and enhance immunostaining detection of secretory proteins.
