Ethylene Glycol, also known as glycol, or EG for short, is the simplest diol. Its CAS number is 107-21-1, its chemical formula is C₂H₆O₂, and its molecular weight is 62.07. It is a colorless, transparent, viscous liquid with a sweet taste and hygroscopicity. The melting point is exposed to open flames, high heat, or contact with oxidants, which may cause combustion and explosion. If exposed to high heat, the pressure inside the container increases, and there is a risk of cracking and explosion.

Ethylene Glycol is an important organic chemical raw material with a wide range of uses:

  • Lubricant: In some lubricant formulations, EG can be used as an additive to improve the performance of lubricants, such as reducing friction coefficients, improving lubrication effects and anti-wear capabilities, etc., and is often used in metal processing, machinery manufacturing and other industries.
  • Surfactant: Used to synthesize surfactants, such as polyethylene glycol-type nonionic surfactants. These surfactants have good emulsification, dispersion, wetting and other properties, and are widely used in detergents, cosmetics, textiles, papermaking and other industries.
  • Antifreeze: The aqueous solution of EG has a low freezing point and a high boiling point, so it is a commonly used antifreeze component in automobiles, ships, industrial cooling systems, etc. It can effectively prevent the cooling system from freezing at low temperatures, while maintaining good heat dissipation performance at high temperatures, protecting the normal operation of equipment such as engines.
  • Cosmetics and skin care products: EG has moisturizing properties and is often added to cosmetics and skin care products as a moisturizer, solvent and preservative, such as creams, lotions, lotions, etc., which can help keep the skin hydrated and make the skin soft and smooth.
  • Polyester resin production: used to make polyester resin, which is an important material for producing plastic films, beverage bottles, electronic and electrical housings and other plastic products. Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic produced with EG as raw material has good transparency, barrier properties and mechanical properties.
