Diethylene Glycol has the appearance of a colorless, transparent liquid, is hygroscopic, odorless, and has a spicy sweet taste. It is a polyol. The chemical formula of DEG is C₄H₁₀O₃, and the molecular weight is 106.12. The density at 25°C is 1.118 g/mL (literature value), the melting point is -10°C (literature value), and the boiling point is 245°C (literature value). The flash point is 143°C, it is soluble in water, the vapor pressure at 20°C is 0.01 mmHg, and the vapor density relative to air is 2.14.
Diethylene Glycol
Diethylene Glycol has many uses:
- Coatings: Diethylene Glycol can be used as a solvent in coatings to help dissolve film-forming substances, so that the coating can be better applied to the surface of the object during construction, forming a uniform and smooth coating, and improving the drying performance and gloss of the coating.
- Fragrances: DEG has good solubility for fragrances and can be used as a carrier for fragrances to better disperse the fragrances in the product. It can also play a role in flavor enhancement and stabilization.
- PET polyester: In the production of PET polyester, DEG can be used as a modifier. A small amount of DEG can improve some properties of PET, such as increasing its flexibility and reducing crystallinity, so as to meet the requirements of PET material performance in different application fields, such as for the production of fibers, films and plastic bottles.
- Plasticizer: Added to polymer materials such as plastics and rubber, it can increase the flexibility, plasticity and processing performance of the materials.
DEG should be sealed and stored in a cool and dry place. Ensure that the workshop has good ventilation facilities. Keep away from fire and water sources. Keep away from oxidants in the storage area.
