P-Xylene, also known as para-xylene or 1,4-xylene, is an organic compound with the molecular formula C8H10 and molecular weight 106.17. It is one of the three isomers of xylene, appearing as a colorless liquid with a benzene-like aroma. P-Xylene is easily soluble in organic solvents and insoluble in water, capable of forming crystals at low temperatures. It exhibits stable chemical properties at room temperature but reacts with strong oxidants (e.g., potassium permanganate). Fast flow can generate static electricity.

Uses

As chemical raw materials, the core use of p-xylene is to produce terephthalic acid (PTA) and dimethyl terephthalate (DMT), which further synthesize polyethylene terephthalate (PET) for manufacturing polyester fibers, plastic bottles, and films. As solvents and additives, it serves as a solvent for rubber, paint, and ink while acting as an aviation gasoline additive to increase octane number.
