1. Styrene Production
Ethylbenzene serves as the key raw material for synthesizing styrene (CAS 100-42-5) via dehydrogenation:
C₆H₅–CH₂CH₃ → C₆H₅–CH=CH₂ + H₂
Styrene is further used to manufacture polystyrene, ABS plastics, and styrene-butadiene rubber.
2. Solvent and Fuel Additive
As a high-boiling-point solvent, ethylbenzene is applied in coatings, inks, and adhesives for its ability to dissolve resins and control drying rates.
When blended into gasoline, it enhances octane rating due to its branched hydrocarbon structure.
