Ethylbenzene (CAS 100-41-4) is an aromatic organic compound with a molecular formula of C₈H₁₀, molecular weight of 106.17 g/mol, and structural formula C₆H₅–CH₂CH₃ (a benzene ring connected to an ethyl group).
Ethylbenzene is a colorless, transparent liquid at room temperature with an aromatic odor similar to gasoline. It has a melting point of −94.95℃, boiling point of 136.2℃, density of 0.8626 g/cm³, and flash point of 15℃ (closed cup), classifying it as a flammable liquid. It is insoluble in water (solubility 0.015 g/100 mL at 20℃) but easily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, diethyl ether, and carbon tetrachloride, with a vapor density of 3.66 (air = 1).

Uses

Chemical Raw Materials
Styrene production: Approximately 95% of ethylbenzene is used for dehydrogenation to produce styrene, a monomer for synthesizing polystyrene, ABS plastics, and styrene-butadiene rubber.
Other synthesis: Used to manufacture diethylbenzene, ethyl anthraquinone, p-nitroacetophenone, and other compounds, as well as synthetic rubber, resin, and special paints.
Solvents and Additives
As a high-boiling-point solvent, it dissolves natural rubber, chloroprene rubber, and grease, and can be mixed with ethanol and ethyl acetate to form a cellulose ether solvent.
When blended into gasoline, it increases the octane number and improves anti-knock performance.

Ethyl benzene is narcotic and toxic, and is classified as a Class 2B carcinogen (possibly carcinogenic to humans) by the World Health Organization.

Chronic effects: Long-term exposure may cause hearing loss and kidney damage. Animal experiments show that low-dose exposure can cause birth defects.
