Expandable polystyrene (EPS) is a white or colorless transparent bead (plural: beads) with controlled particle size. Its CAS number is 14235-54-2, chemical formula is (C₈H₈)ₙ (n = degree of polymerization), and molecular weight varies with polymerization. When heated to 90–110℃, it expands to 30–50 times its original volume, forming a closed-cell foam structure with low thermal conductivity, high elasticity, and shock resistance.
The production of expandable polystyrene uses styrene as the monomer, synthesizes polystyrene beads via suspension polymerization, and incorporates low-boiling hydrocarbons (e.g., pentane, butane) as blowing agents. Foam products are manufactured through pre-foaming (steam heating), aging (stabilizing cell structure), and molding (steam welding) processes.
