The strong intermolecular hydrogen bonding in its structure contributes to its high boiling point, high viscosity, and excellent water solubility-it is miscible with water, ethanol, and acetone, slightly soluble in ether, and insoluble in petroleum hydrocarbons.

Uses
In application areas, diethylene glycol functions as industrial solvents and dehydrating agents: it is used as an aromatic extraction solvent and gas dehydrating agent in petrochemical and natural gas processing, and also serves to dissolve nitrocellulose, resins, inks, and coatings. As plasticizers and lubricants, it enhances flexibility during the production of polyurethane, PVC, and unsaturated polyester resins and acts as a textile lubricant and brake fluid compounding agent.
