Diethylene glycol, also known as 2,2'-oxydiethanol, has the chemical formula C₄H₁₀O₃ and CAS number 111-46-6. It is a low-toxicity compound belonging to the polyol class. At ambient temperature, it exists as a colourless, transparent, odourless viscous liquid. It exhibits hygroscopic properties and is non-corrosive. Its melting point is -10.5°C, boiling point 245°C, and density 1.118 g/mL. It is miscible with water, ethanol, acetone, and similar solvents, but insoluble in diethyl ether and carbon tetrachloride.

DEG Industrial Use
Unsaturated Polyester Resins
Polyester resins derived from DEG are flexible in nature. They are used as low pressure laminates for glass fibres, asbestos, cloth and paper.
Coolants
DEG Industrial can be used in cooling systems as it increases the boiling temperature considerably there by enabling the coolant perform more effectively in carrying off the excess heat generated by auto engines.
Pesticides
DEG is primarily used to encapsulate granules of phorate pesticide.
Rubber Compounding
For coloured rubber products such as hawai chappals, DEG is used as an additive along with silica filler compounds to prevent the absorption of other ingredients such as the accelerator used in the rubber compounds.
Plastisizer
Benzoic acid is esterified with DEG to produce DEG Dibenzoate . It finds an application as plasticizer in PVC Compounds, PVA adhesives and moulded urethanes.
