As a 1.6M–1.9M THF solution, Vinylmagnesium Chloride has a density of 0.95–1.05 g/mL (25°C) and forms an azeotrope with THF at 66°C. It exhibits a flash point of -17°C, making it highly flammable. The reagent reacts violently with water to produce ethylene gas, magnesium hydroxide, and exothermic heat, requiring strict anhydrous conditions. It dissolves readily in aprotic solvents like THF and diethyl ether but is insoluble in protic solvents (alcohols, water).

Cross-Coupling Reactions: Participates in palladium-catalyzed Negishi coupling and nickel-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling with aryl/vinyl halides to introduce vinyl groups.
Heterocycle Synthesis: Used in synthesizing nitrogen-containing heterocycles for pharmaceuticals like Cethromycin.
Polymerization Catalysis: Serves as a precursor for vinyl-functionalized polymers and organometallic materials.
