2,5-Hexanedione (CAS No. 110-13-4) Also known as acetonyl acetone and hexane-2,5-dione, this aliphatic diketone compound has a molecular formula of C6H10O2 and a molecular weight of 114.14 g/mol. It appears as a colorless transparent liquid that may gradually yellow upon prolonged storage.
Chemically stable under normal temperature and pressure, 2,5-Hexanedione may decompose at high temperatures to release carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide. It is highly soluble in polar solvents such as water, ethanol, and ether but insoluble in hydrocarbon solvents. It exhibits typical ketone compound reactions, including condensation with amines to form 2,5-dimethylpyrrole and cyclization with phosphorus pentasulfide to yield 2,5-dimethylthiophene.

Methods of Preparation:
It can be obtained through oxidation and dehydration reaction of 1,4-cyclohexanediol to yield 2,5-hexanedione.
It can also be produced by the reaction of cyclohexanone and benzophenone peroxide under specific conditions.
