Its molecular formula is (C₁₀H₈O₄)ₙ (where n represents the degree of polymerization). Common aliases include poly(ethylene terephthalate) and Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET).
PET appears as a colorless to light yellow granular solid with a melting point of 250–255°C and a density of 1.68 g/mL (at 25°C). It is insoluble in water but soluble in organic solvents such as phenol. Thermally, it exhibits a long-term service temperature not exceeding 120°C and short-term tolerance of 150°C, though it is prone to hydrolysis in strong acid, strong alkali, or water vapor environments.
