Rifampicin is a broad-spectrum antibiotic with a molecular formula of C43​H58​N4​O12​, a molecular weight of 822.95, a CAS number of 13292 - 46 - 1, and an appearance of orange-red flake crystals or brick-red crystalline powder.

Rifampicin has a melting point of 183 - 188 °C (decomposes). It is easily soluble in chloroform and dimethyl sulfoxide, soluble in ethyl acetate, methanol, tetrahydrofuran, propanol, and carbon tetrachloride, and slightly soluble in water. Its solubility in water varies with the pH value. It is 1.3 mg/mL at pH 4.3 and 2.5 mg/mL at pH 7.3.

Uses:

Rifampicin has an antibacterial or bactericidal effect on Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Gram-positive bacteria, and some Gram-negative bacteria. It is mainly used to treat tuberculosis, meningitis, and Staphylococcus aureus infections.

Method of Preparation:

Rifampicin is generally prepared by chemical synthesis. Rifamycin S is used as the raw material, and rifampicin is obtained through a series of reactions such as oxidation, methylation, and reduction. The specific synthesis steps are relatively complex, involving multiple chemical reactions and requiring fine operational control.
