Phenol, also known as hydroxybenzene, is an organic compound with a special phenolic odor. It is easily soluble in water and most organic solvents, has neutral acid-base properties, and can undergo acid-base reactions, oxidation reactions, and substitution reactions with other substances. Its CAS number is 108-95-2, EINECS number is 203-632-7, chemical formula is C₆H₆O, and molecular weight is 94.11. Its density at 25°C is 1.071 g/mL (literature value), melting point is between 40-42°C (literature value), boiling point is 182°C (literature value), and flash point is 175°F.
Phenol

Phenol is an important organic chemical raw material with a wide range of uses in many fields:
- Production of phenolic resin: Phenol can be obtained by polycondensation reaction with formaldehyde to obtain phenolic resin. This resin has good mechanical strength, heat resistance, insulation and other properties, and is widely used in the manufacture of electrical parts, automobile brake pads, plastic tableware, etc.
- Manufacturing synthetic fibers: It is one of the important raw materials for synthesizing polyamide fibers such as nylon-66. Nylon fiber has the advantages of high strength and good wear resistance, and is often used to make clothing, ropes, fishing nets, etc.
- Production of medicine: Hydroxybenzene itself has a certain bactericidal and disinfecting effect, and can be used to prepare some external disinfectants and preservatives. At the same time, it is also an important intermediate for the synthesis of aspirin, acetaminophen and other drugs.
- For pesticides: Hydroxybenzene can be used as a raw material for the production of pesticides, such as the preparation of herbicides such as herbicide ether and 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, as well as some insecticides and fungicides, which helps to improve the yield and quality of crops.
- As dye intermediate: Phenol is used to synthesize a variety of dyes, such as sulfur dyes, acid dyes, etc. These dyes can be used in dyeing processes in textile, leather and other industries to give products rich colors.
- Other uses: It can also be used as an antioxidant in rubber processing to improve the aging resistance of rubber products; in the coating industry, it can be used as an additive to improve the performance of coatings; in addition, it also has certain applications in spices, explosives and other fields.
