What is Phenol?

Phenol is an organic compound with weak acidity. It can react with strong bases such as sodium hydroxide to produce sodium phenolate and water. Its acidity coefficient pKa is 9.89 (at 20℃). It is slightly soluble in cold water, more soluble in hot water, and miscible with organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, chloroform, and glycerol. Its solubility in water at room temperature is 8g/100mL, and its solubility in water at 20℃ is 50mg/mL. It is a clear and colorless solution. Its CAS number is 108-95-2, EINECS number is 203-632-7, chemical formula is C₆H₆O, and molecular weight is 94.11. Its density at 25°C is 1.071 g/mL (literature value).

Uses

• Production of phenolic resin: Phenol can be obtained by polycondensation reaction with formaldehyde. This resin has good mechanical strength, heat resistance, insulation and other properties, and is widely used in the manufacture of electrical parts, automobile brake pads, plastic tableware, etc.
• Manufacturing synthetic fibers: Phenol is one of the important raw materials for synthesizing polyamide fibers such as nylon-66. Nylon fiber has the advantages of high strength and good wear resistance, and is often used to make clothing, ropes, fishing nets, etc.
• Production of medicine: Phenol itself has a certain bactericidal and disinfecting effect, and can be used to prepare some external disinfectant preservatives, such as phenol ointment, etc. At the same time, it is also an important intermediate for the synthesis of aspirin, acetaminophen and other drugs.
