Purine, also known as 7H-imidazo[4,5-d]pyrimidine, is a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound with a molecular formula of C₅H₄N₄ and a molecular weight of 120.11 g/mol. It appears as a colorless to pale yellow crystalline powder with a melting point of 214–217°C. Slightly soluble in water (400 mg/L at 20°C), it readily dissolves in hot water, ethanol, and alkaline solutions. Its pKa value of 2.3 at 20°C and characteristic UV absorption (λmax=260 nm) make it useful in spectral analysis.
Due to the electron-withdrawing effect of the pyrimidine ring on the imidazole ring, purine exhibits weaker acidity than imidazole but stronger alkalinity than pyrimidine. Its conjugated structure imparts aromaticity, enhancing its susceptibility to nucleophilic substitution reactions.
