Oleyl amine (CAS 112-90-3) is a long-chain alkylamine derived from oleic acid, a fatty acid found in plant and animal oils. It appears as a pale yellow to amber liquid at room temperature, with a mild, fatty odor. Unlike many solid amines, it remains liquid due to its unsaturated 18-carbon chain (with one double bond), giving it a lower melting point (around 15-20°C). It is sparingly soluble in water but dissolves easily in organic solvents like ethanol, ether, and oils, thanks to its hydrophobic carbon chain and hydrophilic amino group (-NH₂).
1. Surfactant and Emulsifier
Oleyl amine is widely used to produce surfactants and emulsifiers. In personal care products like hair conditioners and creams, it helps blend oils and water, creating smooth, stable formulations. It also coats hair strands to reduce frizz and add softness. In industrial settings, it's used in metalworking fluids, where it emulsifies oils and lubricants, ensuring they spread evenly over metal surfaces to reduce friction and wear.
2. Nanoparticle Synthesis
A key application is in making nanoparticles (tiny particles used in electronics, medicine, etc.). Oleyl amine acts as a "capping agent," attaching to the surface of growing nanoparticles to control their size and shape. This ensures the particles are uniform, which is critical for their performance in technologies like solar cells or drug delivery systems.
3. Corrosion Inhibition
Similar to other amines, it protects metals from corrosion. It forms a protective layer on steel, aluminum, and copper surfaces, blocking moisture and corrosive substances. 4. Agriculture and Mining
In agriculture, it aids in formulating pesticides and herbicides, helping mix oil-based active ingredients with water for even application. It also enhances the adhesion of these chemicals to plant leaves, improving their effectiveness. In mining, it acts as a collector in froth flotation, attaching to sulfide minerals (like zinc or lead) to separate them from ore efficiently.
