What is 2-aminoethanol used for?
It is a colorless liquid with a mild ammonia odour. MEA is mainly used in sweetening natural gas and coal gas, and as soap or amides in heavy-duty detergents. Monoethanolamine is also used in the production of ethylene amines.
Gas Treatment and CO₂ Removal
One of the most important uses of 2-aminoethanol is in gas sweetening processes. MEA is used to absorb acidic gases such as carbon dioxide (CO₂) and hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) from natural gas, refinery streams, and flue gases in power plants.
Surfactants and Detergent Production
2-Aminoethanol reacts with fatty acids to produce ethanolamides, which are widely used as:
- Foam boosters in shampoos and liquid soaps
- Emulsifying agents in cosmetics
- Antistatic agents in textile softeners
