Ethylene glycol(EG), also known simply as glycol, is the simplest aliphatic diol. It exhibits the typical chemical properties of alcohols, such as forming ethers and esters, undergoing oxidation to produce aldehydes or acids, and condensing to form ethers. It can also undergo halogen substitution. When reacting with acyl chlorides or acid anhydrides, it generally yields diesters.

Ethylene glycol is a chemical which is used in many industrial and commercial applications and it also acts as an antifreeze and coolant in automobiles. When ethylene glycol is added in the water it reduces its freezing point and protects the solution from freezing in cold areas.
Antifreeze solutions for cars may have an ethylene glycol content of 60 to 100%, while windscreen wash may contain up to 30% ethylene glycol.
