Uses

 

In polymer materials, Indene is copolymerized with coumarone to form coumarone-indene resin, used as a rubber tackifier, coating film former, and asphalt modifier. For organic synthesis, it serves as an intermediate for synthesizing indigo, medicines (e.g., antiviral drugs), and fine chemicals, while also participating in the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds like benzofulvene. As solvents and additives, Indene is mixed with other hydrocarbons for use as a paint solvent, and its high-temperature polymerization products act as lubricant additives.

 

Storage and transportation

 

Indene is sensitive to light and air and needs to be sealed and stored away from light. Usually 80~100 ppm of tert-butyl catechol is added to inhibit polymerization. During transportation, it should be handled as a flammable liquid (UN 3295, packaging category III) to avoid mixing with strong acids and oxidants.
