What is Styrene?

Styrene is a colorless oily liquid with aromatic odor. Freezing point - 30.6℃. Boiling point 145℃. Relative density 0.9051. Flash point (open cup) 31.11℃. Autoignition point 490℃. Refractive index 1.5467. Viscosity (20℃) 0.763mPa-s. Slightly soluble in water, soluble in ethanol, ether, methanol, acetone and carbon disulfide. It is easy to polymerize when heated or exposed to sunlight, or in the presence of peroxides, releasing heat during polymerization and causing explosion.

Styrene is an important plastic raw material with a wide range of uses. The following are some of the main aspects:

• General plastics: The main use of Styrene is to produce polystyrene (PS). Polystyrene has good transparency, insulation, water resistance and processing performance. It is widely used in the manufacture of various daily necessities, such as disposable tableware, stationery, toys, cosmetic packaging, etc.; in the field of electronic appliances, it is used to manufacture the shells of televisions, computers, etc., display frames, etc.
• Engineering plastics: Acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer (ABS), widely used in the automotive industry, such as automotive dashboards, door interior panels, bumpers and building materials, toys and other industries. Styrene-acrylonitrile copolymer (SAN), commonly used in the manufacture of optical instruments, lamps, cosmetic packaging, food packaging, etc., can also be used to produce tableware, medical equipment, etc.
• Special plastics: Styrene thermoplastic elastomers (SBCs) can be used to manufacture soles, asphalt modifiers, hot melt adhesives, sealing materials, etc. Polyphenylene ether (PPO), has outstanding insulation properties, water resistance, high temperature stability and mechanical properties. It is often blended and modified with polystyrene and used to manufacture high-frequency insulation materials, high temperature resistant components in electronic appliances, and parts around automobile engines.
