1-Octanol is also called Capryl alcohol. Its CAS number is 111-87-5, EINECS number is 203-917-6, chemical formula is C₈H₁₈O, molecular weight is 130.23. Density at 25°C is 0.827 g/mL (literature value), melting point is -15°C (literature value), boiling point is 196°C (literature value). Flash point is 178 degrees Fahrenheit, insoluble in water, vapor pressure at 25°C is 0.14 mmHg, vapor density relative to air is 4.5. JECFA number is 97, partially soluble in 107 grams per liter of water at 23°C, refractive index of sodium light D line at 20 degrees Celsius is 1.429 (literature value). Its acidity coefficient is 15.27±0.10 (predicted value), and the storage condition is to store it below 30°C. The substance is stable, flammable, incompatible with strong oxidants, and easy to absorb moisture. The appearance is solid, the APHA value is ≤10, and it has an alcohol-like smell.

Uses

• Surfactant: 1-Octanol can be used to synthesize surfactants, such as fatty alcohol polyoxyethylene ethers. These surfactants have good emulsification, dispersing, wetting and other properties, and are widely used in detergents, cosmetics, textile printing and dyeing, leather processing and other industries.
• Fragrance synthesis: Capryl alcohol has a special smell and can be used as a raw material or intermediate for fragrances. It can synthesize some fragrances with fruity and floral smells, which are used to prepare perfumes, flavors and other products to add unique fragrances to them.
• Herbicides: N-Octanol can be used as a solvent or cosolvent for some herbicides, which helps to improve the adhesion and penetration of herbicides on the plant surface and enhance the weed control effect.
• Fuel additives: N-Octanol can be used as a fuel additive to improve the performance of fuel. For example, adding an appropriate amount of octanol to diesel can increase the cetane number of diesel, improve combustion performance, and reduce exhaust emissions.
