What is Propylene Glycol?

1,2-Propanediol, also known as Propylene Glycol, abbreviated as PG, is a colorless, odorless, viscous liquid. It is a small molecule organic compound. It is hygroscopic and stable under normal conditions, but it is easy to generate propionaldehyde, lactic acid, pyruvic acid and acetic acid at high temperatures. It is miscible with water, acetone and chloroform and soluble in ether. Its CAS number is 57-55-6, EINECS number is 200-338-0, chemical formula is C₃H₈O₂, and molecular weight is 76.09. The density at 25°C is 1.036 g/ml (literature value), the melting point is - 60°C (literature value), and the boiling point is 187°C (literature value).

Uses

USP grade Propylene Glycol has high purity and strict quality control, and is often used in the following fields:

• Medical field: Due to the good solubility and low toxicity of MPG, it is often used as a solvent for injections, oral liquid preparations, etc. to help dissolve poorly soluble drugs. In some sustained-release preparations, transdermal patches, etc., as a drug carrier, it helps the slow release and transdermal absorption of drugs. It acts as a moisturizer in topical preparations such as creams and ointments to prevent the preparations from drying out. It also has a certain antibacterial effect and can extend the shelf life of drugs.
• Food field: As a food-grade moisturizer, solvent and antifreeze agent, it can keep the moisture of food and prevent food from drying and deteriorating. It helps to dissolve the flavors and spices in food, so that the fragrance is evenly distributed and the flavor of food is enhanced. It is often used in beverages, candies and other foods.
• Cosmetic field: MPG is a common moisturizing ingredient in cosmetics. It can absorb moisture in the air and form a moisturizing film on the skin surface to keep the skin moisturized. It is used to dissolve oil-soluble ingredients in cosmetics, such as vitamins, plant extracts, etc., to make the texture of cosmetics uniform and stable. For example, some essences use Propylene Glycol to dissolve multiple active ingredients.
