p-Terphenyl (CAS 92-94-4), also known as 1,4-diphenylbenzene or para-terphenyl, is a symmetrical aromatic hydrocarbon composed of three benzene rings connected in a para arrangement, with the molecular formula C₁₈H₁₄ and molar mass 230.30 g/mol.
At room temperature, p-Terphenyl exists as white needle-shaped crystals with a characteristic aromatic odor. The compound exhibits a melting point of 212–213°C, boiling point of 389°C, flash point of 207°C, and density of 1.23 g/cm³ at 25°C. It is practically insoluble in water but dissolves readily in hot benzene, ether, and carbon disulfide, with limited solubility in cold ethanol and acetic acid.

Uses

Scintillating materials: p-Terphenyl is the core component of plastic scintillators, which can convert high-energy particles (such as β rays and γ rays) into visible light. It is widely used in nuclear physics experiments, medical imaging equipment (such as PET scanners) and environmental radiation monitoring systems.
Liquid crystal materials: As a key intermediate of biphenyl liquid crystals, its rigid structure helps to improve the orientation stability and response speed of liquid crystal molecules, and is used in display technologies such as TFT-LCD and OLED.
High-temperature thermal oil: It is mixed with biphenyl ether to form a eutectic mixture (such as Dowtherm A), which has excellent thermal stability and low vapor pressure in the range of 300–400°C, and is used as a heat transfer medium in industries such as petrochemicals, chemical fibers, and food processing.

p-Terphenyl is a flammable solid that may release toxic fumes when burned. Its acute toxicity is low, with an oral LD₅₀>10,000 mg/kg for rats, but long-term exposure may cause damage to the liver and kidneys. According to the GHS classification, this substance is extremely toxic to aquatic organisms (acute toxicity level 1, H400) and should be avoided from entering water bodies. Wear protective glasses, gloves, and a respirator during operation to prevent dust inhalation or skin contact.
