It is slightly soluble in water and ether, but soluble in chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, and ethanol. When exposed to hot water, it hydrolyzes into succinic acid. It is reactive and can undergo addition, condensation, and other reactions with a variety of compounds. Additionally, it is acidic and can react with alkalis to form corresponding salts.
