Azulene, also known as Cyclopentacycloheptene, is a bicyclic non-benzenoid aromatic hydrocarbon. Its CAS number is 275-51-4, its molecular formula is C₁₀H₈, and its molecular weight is 128.17 g/mol. The structure of azulene consists of a five-membered cyclopentadiene ring fused to a seven-membered cycloheptatriene ring via two adjacent carbon atoms.

At room temperature, azulene appears as dark blue, flaky or needle-shaped crystals. It has a naphthalene-like odor, a melting point of 98–100°C, and a boiling point of 242°C. Although it does not dissolve in water, azulene is readily soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol, diethyl ether, and acetone. Additionally, it can dissolve in 60% sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid, and it will reprecipitate when diluted with water.
