As an organic synthesis intermediate, ethyl 6-hydroxyhexanoate can be used to prepare polymer materials such as polyesters and polyethers, and can also be used as a fragrance or drug intermediate. For example, γ-caprolactone can be synthesized through cyclization reaction, and further polymerized to obtain the biodegradable material polycaprolactone (PCL).
