What is 1-Octanol?

1-Octanol is a colorless oily liquid. It is miscible with ethanol, ether and chloroform, but insoluble in water. Boiling point 195°C, relative density 0.822-0.830, refractive index 1.428-1.431, flash point 82.5°C, soluble in 5 volumes of 50% ethanol or 3 volumes of 60% ethanol and oils, acid value <1.0. It has a special aromatic smell. Its CAS number is 111-87-5, EINECS number is 203-917-6, chemical formula is C₈H₁₈O, and molecular weight is 130.23.

Uses

• N-Octanol has low volatility and stability, and is often used to make products such as softeners, surfactants and coatings.
• In agriculture, 1-Octanol can also be used as an insecticide and adjuvant.
• It is also used to produce plasticizers, extractants, stabilizers, and as an intermediate for solvents and fragrances.
• Octanol itself is also used as a fragrance, blending rose, lily and other floral fragrances, as a soap fragrance.
