Phenyllithium (CAS 591-51-5) is an organometallic compound with a molecular formula of C₆H₅Li and a molecular weight of 84.04. Its common alias is lithium benzenide, which is an important lithiation reagent and a strong base in organic synthesis.
Phenyllithium is usually a colorless liquid (in solution). Its density is 0.835 g/mL, boiling point 140–143℃, flash point 20℃. It is soluble in non-polar solvents such as ethers and alkanes and reacts with water to release hydrogen. Phenyllithium can be prepared by reacting bromobenzene with metallic lithium.

Uses
Organic synthesis: Phenyllithium is used as a lithiation reagent to introduce phenyl groups and participate in the construction of carbon-carbon bonds (such as reactions with halogenated hydrocarbons and carbonyl compounds). It is used for the preparation of intermediates such as alkyl lithium, aromatic copper compounds, and fluoroaromatic hydrocarbons. It is also used in dehydrohalogenation reactions in vitamin synthesis, as well as the synthesis of cyclopropene derivatives and naphthyl lithium.
