Uses/Preparation

Uses:

In polymer materials, 2,6-naphthalenedicarboxylic acid serves as a monomer for condensation reactions with ethylene glycol and butanediol, yielding polyethylene naphthalate (PEN) and polybutylene naphthalate (PBN). These polyester materials exhibit high strength, high heat resistance (capable of withstanding long-term use at up to 180°C), and excellent chemical resistance, making them widely applicable in fiber manufacturing, F-class insulation materials, and liquid crystal polymers (LCP).

Method of Preparation:
- 2,6-Naphthalenedicarboxylic acid is prepared by two main methods: oxidation and esterification reactions.
- The oxidation reaction usually uses a mixture of concentrated sulfuric acid and concentrated nitric acid to oxidize naphthalene-2,6-dimethyl ether to naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylic acid.
- Esterification involves the reaction of naphthalene-2,6-dimethanol with formic acid to form an ester, which is then hydrolyzed by heating and acid to produce naphthalene-2,6-dicarboxylic acid.
