Glutaric acid, also known as adipic acid, is an organic compound.Glutaric acid is a colorless crystalline solid with a pungent odor. It has good solubility in water and many organic solvents. Glutaric acid has two carboxyl groups and it is a dicarboxylic acid.
Glutaric acid has a wide range of uses in the chemical industry. It is mainly used in the preparation of polyester resins, such as polycaprolactone, as a raw material for coatings, plastics and fiber materials.
Application:
- Synthetic resins and coatings: Glutaric acid can be used as a dibasic acid to participate in the synthesis of polyester resins and alkyd resins, and is used to produce coatings, adhesives or plasticizers. Its molecular structure can enhance the flexibility and chemical resistance of polymers.
- Medical and fragrance intermediates: It is used to prepare pharmaceutical intermediates (such as liver disease treatment drug precursors) or synthetic fragrances (such as ester flavors), and glutaric acid ester compounds with fruity aroma are generated through esterification reactions.
- Biodegradable materials: It is used to prepare degradable polyesters (such as polypropylene glutarate, PPG) through polycondensation with diol compounds, which are used in the biomedical field (such as surgical sutures, drug sustained-release carriers) or environmentally friendly packaging materials.
- Leather and textile industry: It is used as a tanning agent or auxiliary tanning agent in leather processing to improve the softness and water resistance of leather; it is used in the textile industry to produce antistatic agents or fiber treatment agents to improve fabric performance.
