Octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride (also known as "STAC") is a common quaternary ammonium compound. It appears as a white crystalline solid or powder with a special amine odor. It is soluble in alcohol and hot water, produces a lot of foam when shaken, and has good compatibility with cationic, non-ionic surfactants or dyes and has a significant synergistic effect. STAC has good chemical stability, heat resistance, light resistance, strong acid and alkali resistance; it has excellent penetration, softening, emulsification, antistatic and bactericidal properties.

Application
- Water treatment: Octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride is used as a cationic flocculant to promote the aggregation and precipitation of colloidal particles in water through charge neutralization. It can also be used as a bactericide and algaecide to inhibit the reproduction of microorganisms.
- Textile industry: STAC is used as a fiber softening agent and antistatic agent. It can form an adsorption film on the fiber surface, improve the softness of the fabric and reduce static electricity accumulation.
- Cosmetics and personal care: Octadecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride is used as an emulsifier and conditioner in products such as conditioners and hair sprays to give hair a smooth feel and enhance combing properties.
- Papermaking industry: STAC is used as a paper sizing agent or retention aid to improve the water resistance of paper, while helping fine fibers and fillers to remain in the pulp, improving the quality of paper.
