2-Methoxybenzoic Acid is a white to off - white crystalline powder. It has a density of 1.38g/cm³, a melting point of 98 - 100°C (lit.), a boiling point of 279.9±13.0°C at 760mmHg, and a flash point of 116.3±13.3°C. It is easily soluble in ethanol, ether, chloroform, benzene, and carbon tetrachloride, soluble in 200 parts of water at 30°C, and slightly more soluble in boiling water.

Production method

The reaction method of salicylic acid and dimethyl sulfate: Salicylic acid is dissolved in sodium hydroxide solution, cooled to below 20℃, and dimethyl sulfate is added dropwise. The temperature is controlled at about 20℃. After adding half of it, sodium hydroxide solution is added dropwise at the same time. After adding, it is heated to 95℃ within 1 hour, and sodium hydroxide solution is added dropwise. Stir and reflux for 6 - 7 hours. Cool to room temperature, acidify with concentrated hydrochloric acid to pH 2, let stand, filter, wash with water, wash with sodium hydroxide solution to pH = 8 - 9, add crystalline sodium acetate and glacial acetic acid, let stand, and filter out 2-Methoxybenzoic Acid.
