Properties:
1. Appearance: Methylphosphonic acid is a colorless crystalline solid, sometimes in the form of white powder.

3. Stability: It is relatively stable at room temperature, but decomposes at high temperature to produce toxic gases.

Methylphosphonic acid is an organophosphorus compound with the chemical formula CH3P(O)(OH)2. The phosphorus center is tetrahedral and is bonded to a methyl group, two OH groups and an oxygen. Methylphosphonic acid is a white, non-volatile solid that is poorly soluble in organic solvent but soluble in water and common alcohols.

Sources/Uses:

Breakdown product of the nerve agents sarin, soman, and VX; Used in the production of lubricant additives, to treat textiles, and to simulate chemical warfare agents.

1. as a catalyst: it can be used as a ligand to construct coordination compounds and is widely used in organic synthesis reactions.
2. as surfactant: it and its derivatives have surface activity, and can be used to prepare liquid crystal materials, emulsions and colloids.
3. As flame retardant: Methylphosphonic acid and its derivatives can be used as flame retardant for polymers to provide flame retardant properties of materials.

Method of Preparation:
It can be prepared by reaction of methanol and phosphorus trichloride:
PCl3 + 3CH3OH → CH3PO(OH)2 + 3HCl
