2,2,4,4-Tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol (CAS 3010-96-6, abbreviated as TMCD) is an organic diol compound with a molecular formula of C8H16O2 and a molecular weight of 144.21 g/mol. It features a tetramethyl-substituted cyclobutane ring with hydroxyl groups at both ends, existing as a mixture of cis and trans isomers.
2,2,4,4-Tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol exists as a colorless liquid or white crystal at room temperature, with a melting point range of 45–50°C. Soluble in organic solvents such as ethanol and acetone, it is slightly soluble in water. As a cycloalkanediol, it exhibits stable chemical properties and can undergo polycondensation reactions with anhydrides, isocyanates, and other reagents.

Uses:

2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol is mainly used in the production of food contact-grade polyester materials. According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), when used as a comonomer with a content ≤ 35 mol% of the diol component, it can be used to manufacture packaging materials for non-fat food contact, suitable for room or low-temperature long-term storage and hot filling processes. The final product is prohibited from contacting spirits and high-fat foods (e.g., D2 simulant).

Preparation method:
2,2,4,4-Tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol can be prepared in many ways, and the common methods include the following two:
Generation of it by reaction of cyclobutanol with methyl tert-butyl ether.
Generation of it by hydrolysis of 2,2,4,4-tetramethyl-1,3-cyclobutanediol with acetic acid.
