Butyl salicylate uses

Uses & Preparation

Uses:
- Often used as a solvent and intermediate, especially in the paint and ink industry.
- Can be used as a plastic softener, lubricant and antistatic agent in a variety of industrial applications.

Butyl salicylate is a chemical compound that is an ester of salicylic acid. It has been demonstrated that this compound possesses anti-inflammatory properties, which are attributable to its capacity to impede the synthesis of prostaglandins and other mediators that contribute to the inflammatory response. Additionally, this drug has demonstrated cytotoxicity against squamous carcinoma cells in cell culture, suggesting potential utility in the treatment of myeloma cells. However, it is less stable than aspirin due to its reactivity with magnesium salt, which can result in polymerization.

Method of Preparation:
Butyl salicylate can be prepared by the esterification reaction of n-butanol and salicylic anhydride. In this reaction, n-butanol acts as an alcohol and reacts with salicylic anhydride to form it, while water is produced.
