The chemical name of Tween 60 is Polyoxyethylene sorbitan monostearate (Note: the original 1,4-anhydro-6-O-dodecanoyl-2,3-bis-O-(2-hydroxyethyl)-D-glucitol is incorrect. This is not the accurate chemical name of Tween 60, and the correct one is provided here for accuracy. ), its CAS number is 9005-67-8, the molecular formula is usually expressed as C64​H126​O26​ (Note: the original C22​H42​O8​ is wrong, corrected accordingly), and the molecular weight is about 1311.70. It also has multiple aliases, such as Polysorbate 60.

In appearance, Tween 60 usually appears as a lemon-colored to orange oily liquid or semi-gel state, with a slight special odor and a slightly bitter taste. It is soluble in water, aniline, ethyl acetate and toluene, but insoluble in mineral oil and vegetable oil. In terms of physical properties, its melting point is 45-50°C, boiling point is about 802.68°C, density is 1.044 g/ml (at 25°C), vapor pressure is less than 10 hPa (at 20°C), flash point is greater than 230°F, storage temperature must be kept below 30°C, solubility in water is 100 g/L, its hydrophilic-lipophilic balance (HLB) is 15, and logP value at 25°C is 3.938. In addition, its aqueous solution pH value is between 5.5-7.7 (50g/L, H2​O, at 25°C), the smell shows a mild alcohol smell, and the freezing point is between 21.0 and 25.0°C.

Uses

Food industry: Tween 60 is used as an O/W food emulsifier, either alone or mixed with Span-60, Span-65, and Span-80. In China, it is stipulated that it can be used in bread, with a maximum usage of 2.5 g/kg; the maximum usage in emulsified flavors is 1.5 g/kg.

Pharmaceutical industry: In the pharmaceutical field, it can be used as an emulsifier, dispersant, solubilizer, etc., and applied in the production of medicines, such as liquid preparations, creams, etc.

Cosmetic industry: It is used as an emulsifier, softener, antistatic agent, etc., which can make the oil phase and water phase in cosmetics evenly mixed, and improve the stability and feel of the product.
