Elesclomol is an organic compound that can be dissolved in organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, and chloroform. However, it is only slightly soluble in water.

Uses:

Elesclomol has multiple uses. It is a commonly used preservative. Additionally, it is a novel matrix metalloproteinase inhibitor. Studies have shown that it can inhibit the growth of cancer cells. It binds to the active sites of matrix metalloproteinases -9 and -2, which are enzymes that degrade the extracellular matrix. By doing so, it prevents invasion and metastasis. It also inhibits mitochondrial functions by reducing ATP production, leading to cell death. It has been demonstrated to inhibit the activity of DNA polymerase in HL60 cells, a human myeloid leukemia cell line. This drug also blocks the response element for hypoxia-inducible factor 1 alpha (HIF-1α), an important transcription factor involved in the cellular response to hypoxia. As a result, the expression of genes required for energy metabolism and mitochondrial functions is decreased. Elesclomol also inhibits caspase-independent cell death induced by pharmacological agents such as carboplatin.
