Polylactic Acid (PLA), also known as Propanoic acid, 2-hydroxy-, homopolymer, is a biodegradable polymer material. It is mainly synthesized from lactic acid obtained by the fermentation of renewable resources such as corn and cassava. Its molecular formula is C₃H₆O₃ (repeating unit), and its molecular weight usually ranges from 1,000 to 60,000 g/mol, which can be adjusted according to application requirements.
Polylactic Acid (PLA) appears as white to light yellow powder or granules. It has a density of about 1.25–1.28 g/cm³ and a melting point of approximately 176°C. It is slightly soluble in water and readily soluble in organic solvents such as chloroform, dichloromethane, and acetone. This material is sensitive to light and heat, so it needs to be stored in dry and cool conditions to maintain its stability.

Polylactic Acid (PLA) is used to manufacture degradable sutures that can be decomposed and absorbed by themselves after surgery.
It is applied in the fabrication of bone fixation devices and tissue engineering scaffolds because of its excellent biocompatibility.
Packaging and disposables
It is used to produce environmentally friendly packaging materials, tableware, and food containers that can degrade into CO₂ and water within one year under composting conditions.
3D printing
As a commonly used consumable, Polylactic Acid (PLA) is widely applied in additive manufacturing due to its low toxicity and ease of processing.

 

Material properties and limitations

 

PLA has good biodegradability and renewability, but has mechanical defects such as high brittleness and poor flexibility. It usually needs to be blended with other polymers (such as polycaprolactone) to improve toughness. Its chemical structure contains ester bonds, resulting in insufficient hydrophilicity, and the degradation rate needs to be controlled by modification.
