Aluminum chloride hexahydrate decomposes readily at high temperatures, releasing hydrogen chloride gas. When dissolved in water, it reacts vigorously to generate hydrochloric acid and aluminum hydroxide, accompanied by significant heat release. As a Lewis acid, it forms complexes with various inorganic and organic compounds, such as amine complexes with ammonia and M[AlCl₄]-type complexes with monovalent metal halides.
